Fodder Beet
High-sugar forage that drives animal performance
Fodder Beet is one of the highest-yielding winter forages available, delivering exceptional dry matter production and consistent animal performance when managed well. It offers a dense, energy-rich feed source ideal for dairy, beef, and sheep systems, providing high metabolizable energy (ME) levels that support liveweight gain, milk production, and feed efficiency through the colder months. With strong visual uniformity and firm, smooth bulbs, Vernado’s fodder beet delivers both quality and reliability in every crop.
Sown from October through December, fodder beet performs best in well-drained, fertile soils under full sunlight. Recommended sowing rates are 80,000–100,000 seeds/ha (around 8–10 kg/ha precision-drilled), depending on row spacing and soil conditions. Once established, it offers a highly palatable feed with excellent utilisation rates—up to 85–90%—and can produce 20–30 t DM/ha under optimal management. Its consistent bulb formation and disease resistance make it a dependable performer in diverse New Zealand climates.
With careful grazing management, fodder beet integrates seamlessly into a rotation or finishing program. Transitioning stock gradually (over 10–14 days) is key to avoid digestive issues while maximising energy intake. Used strategically, it can extend feed supply, reduce purchased supplement costs, and improve wintering efficiency. Vernado’s varieties are bred for strong establishment, uniform growth, and high sugar content—turning every hectare into a powerhouse of productive energy for your herd.
